The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program in Santhali at St. Columba’s College, Hazaribagh, is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Santhali language, literature, and cultural heritage. Santhali, an Austroasiatic language spoken predominantly by the Santhal community, holds a significant place in India’s linguistic diversity. The course spans three years and is divided into six semesters, following a structured curriculum that integrates traditional linguistic studies with modern applications. The program is aimed at students who wish to delve deep into the linguistic, literary, and socio-cultural aspects of the Santhal community, preserving and promoting their rich heritage.

Throughout the course, students will explore various dimensions of Santhali, including its phonetics, grammar, and syntax, ensuring a strong foundation in the language. The curriculum also includes an in-depth study of Santhali literature, covering both classical and contemporary works, poetry, prose, and folklore. Special emphasis is given to the Ol Chiki script, which was developed by Pandit Raghunath Murmu and is the official writing system for the language. The program also explores the role of Santhali in the socio-political and historical context, highlighting its contributions to indigenous literature and cultural movements.

The course structure consists of core subjects, elective papers, and research-based projects that encourage students to critically analyze and appreciate the linguistic evolution of Santhali. Students are also introduced to oral traditions, folk songs, and tribal storytelling techniques, which are essential components of Santhali culture. Fieldwork and practical training are often included to provide hands-on experience in language preservation, translation, and documentation. The program is designed to equip students with the necessary skills for careers in education, research, translation, media, and cultural preservation.

With a seat capacity of 80 students, the Santhali B.A. program at St. Columba’s College is open to those who have a keen interest in indigenous languages and literature. The semester fee for the course is ₹2,000, making it accessible to students from various backgrounds.
